I purchased this record as a new fan of Built To Spill. I've listened to all of their records since Keep it Like a Secret, and i have to say, this one is aptly titled. "The Normal Years" pulses youth and shows the roots of habits and ideas that Martsch built onto for the following two decades. You can feel the band feeling out their niche in rhythmic alt rock and it's beautiful, energetic, and all around fun.
Favorite track: Sick & Wrong.
This ten song collection has a representation from each line-up of Built to Spill from 1993 to 1995. Included are "Shortcut" from the first album session; the six songs from the November 1993 Dub Narcotic session that yielded the three Olympia area label 45s on Saturnine, Atlas/Face the Music and K ; "Still Flat" from the Built to Spill Caustic Resin session; "Some" recorded live in Chicago with Dave and James, and a cover of Daniel Johnston's "Some things Last a Long Time".
